Tom Walsh Design - BookLook, January

One of my New Years resolutions for 2011 (and probably the only one I’ll stick to…) is to buy, and read, a new design book each month. Not just anything that’s been published though, I’ve written up a list of twelve books I’ve always thought about buying but never committed to. The first in my list is the classic ‘Marks’ by Pentagram (pictured). A 400+ page catalogue of Pentagrams many marks from over the years. From their identities for Penguin (and their children’s editions Puffin) books, the V&A and D&AD to more obscure work, like their simple piece for The Athenium hotel (shown below) it’s essential reading for any designer.

Tom Walsh Design - Client List

I’ve finally got round to adding a ‘Clients’ page to my site, so now older projects that may not necessarily be included in the navigation can still be found, and people can have a quick browse through the sort of people I’ve previously worked for. A quick addition, but hopefully of some use. Next up my new ‘Photography’ gallery…

As part of the launch of their SS11 campaign I was asked to produce a Flash brochure to go in L.K.Bennett’s new micro-site. Its a simple addition that uses XML to pull in the individual pages and reflects the usability of the printed version.

Tom Walsh Design - L.K.Bennett YouTube Channel

Following the popularity of last seasons ‘Life Is The Occasion’ AW10 campaign, featuring real women, L.K.Bennett’s SS11 campaign has even more in depth video interviews with each of its ‘brand ambassadors’. With this in mind it only seemed natural to find a suitable medium to showcase the full campaign and five individual video pieces, and today I was given the go ahead to launch the L.K.Bennett ‘Life Is The Occasion’ YouTube Channel! My first time working with YouTube Channels I was surprised by the flexibility they offer for customisation, which allowed me to adapt it to reflect the brand and look quite nice at the same time (if I do say so myself..).

Above is the main campaign video, and if you’d like to check the full channel out you can take a look here

Tom Walsh Design - Dataflow

Although the book itself is more focused on visual, rather than typographic, representations of information, I couldn’t help but appreciate the cover. The block fluorescent characters, which remind me a little of non-formats work, stand out perfectly against the background landscape.

As part of their ongoing projects with ‘Street View’, the more recent addition to Google Maps, Google have now teamed up with leading galleries across the world to bring art into peoples homes. With Art Projects you can explore galleries and museums using their Street View technology, view artworks in high resolution and even create your own collection from the pieces available to share with friends and family. They describe it on the website as –

A unique collaboration with some of the world’s most acclaimed art museums to enable people to discover and view more than a thousand artworks online in extraordinary detail.

With a list including The Museum of Modern Art (NYC), The National Gallery (London), Rijksmuseum (Amsterdam), State Tretyakov Gallery (Moscow) and Tate Britain (London), to name but a few, some of the best known collections are now accessible right from your sofa!

Tom Walsh Design - So you need a typeface? This project by Julian Hansen is a nice little guide on how to choose the right font for the right project. Loosely based on the top 50 of Die 100 Besten Schriften by Font Shop it takes the pain out of picking that perfect typeface and looks quite nice at the same time!

My first moving image ‘Type I Like’ entry had to go to the Alien title sequence. The simplicity and balance as each line appears before gradually forming into the films title makes it as nice to look at as it is timeless.
